R&D: 001 Smock
The debut product in our Made in London collection is the 001 Smock. Inspired by the WWII US Navy anti-gas smock parka, circa 1940.
It's reported that on D-Day, sailors stationed on ships wore these jackets in a raw white cotton colour. Those who were sent ashore would typically over-dye and soak them in anti-gas chemicals for further protection. There are also examples of a denim version which illustrates one of the only practical applications of denim during WWII.
Paying attention to the iconic silhouette and lines of the original, we wanted to create a more utilitarian take on the jacket. Removing such features as the triple-layered button system and adjustable neck-width, our focus was to adapt the jacket for simplified everyday use. Retained original features include a wide button placket, high funnel neck and rounded waist pockets.
Top-stitched seams throughout ensure a durable build, with a double lined hood for rigidity and an added natural herringbone drawstring for reaching a desired fit on the waist.
The first iteration of the 001 Smock will be available in a seasonal 310gsm cotton canvas sourced from Brisbane Moss, one of Yorkshire's longest running, luxury textile firms. The smock is finished with buttons from Courtney & Co., the last remaining British manufacturer of natural Corozo nut buttons.
Available online from 1st April 2020, limited to 50 pieces per colourway. Sign up below to find out first.
